JUNE 2010 NEWSLETTER

Hearty congratulations to the man of the moment, our affable Patron, Richard M.Scelly, QSM.

Queen Elizabeth celebrated her official birthday on June 1st and awarded RMS with this honour for his many years of special service to the Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club.

Secondary news.

Welcome to the June 2010 newsletter, see below for contributions from a variety of your mentors at the club.

When someone tells me there is only one way to do things, it always lights a fire under my butt. My instant reaction is, I'm gonna prove you wrong.

Director of Training and Competition update

It was encouraging to hear from Steve Pipe. He relayed the news that the Girls U21 have started training at Karapiro in preparation for next year's Nationals, as have the Junior Boys and U23 Crew.

I've been in touch with Daniel Grant about models for out-of-season training programmes. We're attempting to organise a weekend when he can come down and work though a planning session with me, and go through gear and repairs.  Both Dan and I have made suggestions for inclusion in the Club Survey. Given the growth in Ocean Athletes, the National IRB hosting potential, interest in canoes- and of course surfboats- I'd like some ideas from members as to where they think our sports-funding priorities should be.

 Club Captain update

The Board has been working away over the past month on a number of projects for the upcoming season, the most notable of which is the inaugural Club Survey.

One of our newest board members, Rachelle, will explain the survey a bit more (below) but I'd just like to urge every member to go online and complete the survey. Collectively we are trying to do what is best for our members and what the membership wants, so here is your chance to have a say in how your club is run!

As always, if you have any questions or comments about the club please feel free to contact me, preferably by email at mike.tames@gmail.com.

Junior Board Member Rachelle's update

Mitch Jensen and I have been co-opted onto the Board of Directors. We're currently thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to give our input and time into the place we both love so much. We have spent many hours working on this survey to make sure it relates to everyone in the Club, so please take the time to fill it out. It is attached below. We value your input! Remember, this is your prime opportunity to tell us what you think. Everyone who submits their survey by July 8th 2010 will go into the draw to win a mint prize! A $100 voucher fror Nero's in Whangamata. The link for the Survey Monkey is:

Click on the link and follow instructions.

The survey will be open from 5pm June 14 and will close at 5pm July 14

The survey is not the only opportunity you have to give us input or ideas about the Club. We junior board members represent you and your wishes-providing they are in keeping with our Club's vision!`Please feel free to contact Mitch or myself; in person, or by phone, Facebook or email. We're here to help and facilitate improvements to this club, so please share with us.

I sure hope summer isn't too far away; I'm getting sick of playing netball in the rain! I always associate lots of water with Whanga beach and Speedo's!

I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces soon!

Club Development Officer Lachlan's update

The Bay of Plenty Awards dinner is coming up soon at Sebel, Trinity Wharf, Tauranga.

Date: Saturday June 26th 2009

Time: 6:30pm onwards

Buffet dinner

Smart Casual dress

This is going to be a great night for us all to enjoy the successes of the 2009/2010 season, share some laughs with friends from around the region, and eat great food. There will be no actual 'tickets' as such, but there will be names on the door for those that have paid (just one less fiddly thing to send out and post).

A big drawcard for the night is the guest speaker Shaun Quincey. Shaun (www.tasmantrespasser.com) successfully became the first man to cross the Tasman (his father went the opposite way in 1977) which brought him across the 2500km stretch of sea after 54 gruelling days and encountering many desperate situations at sea. Shaun is also a volunteer lifeguard and motivational speaker. We're hoping his wise words will resonate with our listeners, and prove that anything you put your mind to can be achieved!
