"Unlike other emergency services which are able to rely on mechanised support, Lifeguarding in its purest form comes down to a simple struggle against forces of nature by one human being to save the life of another. Even with new developments in motorised rescue equipment, many rescue situations depend on sheer strength, physical endurance and swimming skills of the Lifeguard". B. Chris Brewster
Whangamata SLSC prides itself on being one of the best patrolling surf clubs in the country. Over the last five years over 500 lives have been saved by actions taken by volunteer surf lifeguards at Whangamata Beach.
If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard at Whangamata beach please contact the club (see contacts page) to start your training.
Initially you will be placed in a 'patrol group' as part of the roster to help out the patrol and start your training. If you still want to continue on and qualify as an active surf lifeguard we will register you for a district endorsed training camp to complete your training.
