Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club has a strong Junior Surf
programme where children aged 6 - 14 years learn surf skills, surf
sports, and how to stay safe at the beach in an exciting
environment with other children their age.
The programme starts with Nippers; where 6 - 9 year olds are
coached for an hour and a half about beach safety, surf safety,
surf sports, first aid, and how everything they need to know about
the coastal environment.
The next step is the Cadet programme; here 10 - 13 year olds are
coached for an hour and a half in the same, but further advanced
skills about surf life saving and the coastal environment in which
the programme is held.
For those children serious about becoming a life guard the
Rookie programme is available for them. Rookies sees 12-13 year
olds taught life guarding skills which enable them to sit an exam
at the end of the season gaining the surf life guard
certificate.
For those children serious about competing our high performance
squad (HP) is coached by our surf coach, training the children up
towards a national level where children compete in regional, and
national events. Every season the number of junior members
increases, with 220 financial members for the 2010-11 season.
Junior surf is run every Sunday Labour weekend - Easter, and six
days a week [except Saturday] boxing day to end of January.
