How to become a life guard: Whangamata SLSC prides itself on
being one of the best patrolling surf clubs in the country. For the
2010-11 season Whangamata Surf Life Guards patrolled a total of 8,
396 hours, rescued 78 people, completed 207 first aid incidents,
and completed 22 searches.
If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard at Whangamata
beach please email wslscnewguards@gmail.com. Whangamata SLSC runs
an annual winter camp where potential guards learn fundamental
skills to ensure they can complete the Labour weekend exam.
Requirements to become a Volunteer Surf Lifeguard
- Minimum Age: 14
- Member of a Surf Life Saving Club
- Attend Surf Lifeguard training sessions
- Pass the SLSNZ Surf Lifeguard Award Examination.
The exam comprises:
- 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
- Rescue releases assessment in the pool
- Run/swim/run in the surf • Tube rescue assessment
- Practical surf knowledge test and theory exam
Once you are qualified you can commence patrolling and are able
to utilise Trust Waikato Whangamata SLSC's Lifeguard Skills /
Development courses to extend your training and partake in our Surf
Sport's programme.
